What exactly IS Asbestos? Asbestos is made up of a few different fibrous minerals. These minerals are almost indestructible and are extremely strong. They are also flame and heat resistant and are best dealt with by trained asbestos removal contractors. Asbestos is used in several different industrial and building products. A few of the most common uses for asbestos are listed below:

  • Insulation on mechanical systems such as boilers and piping
  • Decorative and insulating surfacing materials in buildings
  • Acoustical materials and surface treatments
  • Fireproofing material in all types of buildings
  • Automotive and machinery brakes
  • Gasket materials
  • Roofing felts and tars
  • Electrical insulation boards and wire insulation
  • Flooring tiles and flooring felts
    Insulation papers and boards
  • Cement shingles, panels, pipes, and ducts

Since asbestos was previously viewed as an almost miraculous mineral, it was used for many years in the construction industry and can be found all over the place in a variety of forms ranging from boiler insulation to siding. Asbestos removal is important due to the mineral's potential for harm to the human body, which cannot break it down. in the 1970s, the EPA banned a few types of asbestos due to their associated risks (mainly cancer). However, many buildings remain that are full of asbestos and this is where EME can help. Since asbestos is thought to be harmful mainly when inhaled into the lungs, it is not considered as dangerous when in an undisturbed state. Asbestos removal, however, disturbs its state and thus must be conducted by trained professionals with the proper gear. To this day there are still legal uses for asbestos. For more information on asbestos and asbestos products, see the EPA asbestos home page.
